Yesterday UMBC PhD student Akshay Java launched a new service, Wikimatix, that shows the Google’s 100 hot search terms for the past hour and tries to explain each with information extracted from Wikipedia.

Google opens AdSense for feeds

Google has opened up it’s AdSense for feeds program to everyone, according to a post Google Launches AdSense for Feeds. I suppose that a significant fraction of people read blogs and other online sources through a feed reader and only infrequently visit the sites they follow. Google is in a good position to exploit this since it controls both a popular feed reader and a feed management system.

Dell trying to trademark cloud computing

Cloud computing is a hot topic this year, with IBM, Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, Intel, HP and Amazon all offering, using or developing high-end computing services typically described as “cloud computing”. We’ve started using it in our lab, like many research groups, via the Hadoop software framework and Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud services.

What Might Google Look Like If Results Were Social?

Google has backed off the Digg purchase.  But I doubt they’ve given up on social voting and commenting in search results.  There was a lot of buzz last week on a possible marriage between Google and Digg, along with posts on TechCrunch showing how Google is experimenting with social search.

Reciprocal Linking for Ranking is Anything But Dead

Over the past couple of years I’ve heard the mantra that the value of reciprocal linking is diminishing daily, to the point where it’s no longer worth the time and effort.

Even Google’s Matt Cutts has said, “As Google changes algorithms over time, excessive reciprocal links will probably carry less weight.”

Google Maps walking directions from NYC to LA

“Use caution when walking in unfamiliar areas” warns Google as if ask for walking directions in Google Maps. That’s always good advice I suppose.

Google Maps now gives directions for getting from one place to another in three modes: by car, by public transit and by walking. After experimenting with a few examples, I found the that the walking routes differed from the driving ones and were generally pretty reasonable.
